Abstract:

Representing the category of "musicality" in the world of aesthetic values, the report's author based her concept on the value of music as the substance and music as a way of valuable interaction of the man with the world. Music is, on the one hand, the acoustic (or divine) substance enclosing a law of world order and thus is a way of learning and, on the other hand, music is a necessary art for a man, the image of life, acting as a regulator of relations in the system: the man - the whole world (cosmos) - society (the state). In the modern world we should speak about the music being on a global scale. Aesthetic category "musicality" goes back to the idea of music in the ancient philosophies. Music and musical expression are the universal harmony, fluid nature of the world, the universal rhythm and rhythm of human existence, process and function. Music permeates the expressive forms of life. Category "musicality" is associated with the concept of "the musical man" that the aesthetic experience of the world follows the laws of order, harmony, not excluding the effects of disharmony in the spatial-temporal progress toward perfection. In the higher forms of aesthetic activity musicality is present in all art forms and is particularly important in the modern aesthetic assimilation of the world. Musicality can act in two ways: the characteristics of aesthetic perception, emphasizing any rhythm-spatial-temporal sense, and the characteristics of structural features in artistic creation. Musicality as esthetic it is caused by rhythms heard and unheard, judging and estimating. We experience musicality in nature and in life, in art and culture.

If to investigate a view of music as an art form and the musical theory as they were represented in antique and Old East philosophical thought, it is possible to come to the approval of the following concept: music is a substance and a way of valuable interaction of the person with the world. Music is, on the one hand, acoustic (or divine) substance implying laws of harmony of the world and by that being the way of knowing and, on the other hand, music is the art necessary for the person, forming his way of life, acting as a regulator of the relations in a system: the person - the whole world (space) – society (state). In the modern world it is necessary to speak about musical being in global scales.

The aesthetic category "musicality" goes back to the idea that in ancient philosophical systems music mattered more than the art of singing and playing musical instruments, it stood out among arts and was an art equivalent of philosophy and mathematics. Music as a science and art received the special status in ancient philosophy; it possessed a cosmocentric, anthropological and social significance. Pythagoreans asserted that «everything is a number», and noted connection of music with space spheres’ harmony. With the help of music they were involved in healing, set up the state of mind in a certain way, because they believed that "lack of harmonization” of the soul is the source of the disease of the body. Musical harmony of human social space can be found in unity of three emanating forms, interdependent and determined by the supreme Harmony as a principle, the law of life: harmony of space spheres’ movement, harmony of human souls and bodies, musical harmony of songs and round dances.

The philosophy of music of Plato arose on the basis of a Pythagorean cosmology and a music orientation to the person. Thus Plato noted that «the person wise and virtuous seems really musical because he took the finest harmony not from lira or any other musical instrument, but from the life itself, having coordinated in himself words with affairs …» (Laches). Hence, the «musical man» is a person whose way of life is consistent with wisdom, beauty, goodness, truth. Plato defined basic functions of music as the part of soul, cultivating the person and society. These are aesthetic, ethical, hedonistic, cognitive, communicative (collective round dances and songs), educational functions. As people in antiquity knew about power of music influence on a state of mind of the person, Plato said that music should be a public affair because musical rhythm and harmony penetrate into soul, strongly touching it, can do soul decent, however under certain conditions. Plato and Aristotle supported regulations establishment in questions of musical education, introduction of moral censorship, which controls the meaning and content of poetry, songs and dances.

In antiquity ontological and epistemological value of music was connected with metaphysics of space harmony, a universal rhythm, and sciences. It was believed that through study of music it is possible to come closer to space not only intuitively, but also by mind, studying musical harmony. It is known that Plato singled out four sciences which were introduction in the theory of being: 1) arithmetic which brings the true advantage if used for the sake of knowledge, instead of selling; 2) geometry which attracts soul to truth and influences philosophical thought; 3) astronomy which forces soul to look up and conducts it away from all common, helps to study "hidden" being, watching stars and planets – as a handbook for studying of authentic being; 4) music, the doctrine about musical harmony as the true nature opens in it not in comparison of accords and the sounds perceived by sensual hearing, but by mind.

Now let us turn to ancient Chinese thought on essence of pervasive music, musicality as the substantial being. The role of music in Ancient China was so great that music was thought not as an art form for pleasure, but a regulator of a way of life, was considered a matter of governors of kingdoms. Music was used according to regulations as it had the magic force of influence caused by its deep connection with «the great beginning», Tao (Dao). The philosophical thought observed and taught how to regulate all affairs in the state and in life of each person by means of music. For this purpose rules of musical writing were established. The book «Li Zi», which has been created from IV to the I centuries BC, represents a statement of philosophical views of Confucius on order establishment. Among them there are «Notes about music» which deal with music of world Tao, soul and spirit music and corporally perceived musical sounds. It reminds a well-known hierarchy of three types of music according to Boethius: world (harmony of the world), human (music of vibrations of human soul), instrumental (made by musical instruments, actually musical art). However in Ancient China they were not talking about three forms of musical life, an emanation of the musical. Ancient Chinese musical harmony is pervasive and ubiquitous from property of Tao, its substance is invariable, and its being is expressed in constant movement, in the course of Yin and Yang overflowing and their harmonic equilibrium. As we understand, music and musicalality are expression of fluid nature of the world, the beginning of music lies in depth and is hidden, that defines rigorous rules of its use for human existence. The nature of music is also explained in "Lu-Shi Chun Qiu" ancient monument - III century BC, in the chapter «Great music». The ontological substance of music in this book is presented in interrelation with life values. As the source of music is in «the great beginning», it should be created on fixed rhythms and tones. A great process of the movement of the world and movement in the world is carried out through musical sound and rhythm. Music is essentially great because it expresses the harmony of heaven and earth, consistency of Yin and Yang. «Great music» exists together with the world of the person, accompanying and regulating his life as the supreme value. According to treatises of Old Chinese philosophy, a wise person, analyzing all phenomena, comes to a conclusion that the most valuable in the world is life. The music philosophy in ancient China comprehends music as musicality, forming a way of life and musicality as fluid, eternal in movement life basis. Thus, early philosophical systems specify that it is possible to define music as the fluid substance of the world displaying an order of a universe, harmony of a universe.

Medieval European philosophers and theorists of art treated music not as an art, but as a science of proper modulation (Latin «modus» means "measure"). Original music is not that is sung and played spontaneously, on hearing, but which is based on a science of numerical relations, and is created by rules of harmony, the harmony having mathematical regularities. Augustine Aurelius highlighted the essence of music: «music is the Rhythm», which originates in the perfect Divine. In the treatise «On music», consisting of six books, he classifies musical rhythms’ types penetrating expressive forms of human and space being.

The philosophical thought on music went deep into the subsequent eras from the point of view of ontology, epistemology, sociology, psychology, phenomenology; it saw in it realization of thought processes, universe display, imitation of nature, art in the world of the person. Connection of music with space, number, myth, ethos, affects, game, ceremonies, and rite is traced. The philosopher represents music in a world picture, as a logic subject, an open symbol in the history of culture; he sees in it metaphysical sense and a phenomenon finding the function relations, peculiar to regularities of a physical science. The music nature is such that its matter and aesthetic energy allow to consider music in a context of scientific and humanitarian knowledge, thus the sound body of music can be “fastened" to this or that ideology. The philosophical art criticism expressed opinion that music history does not develop by chance, evolving together with mankind history, it is the realization of a universal «genetic code of music», and it becomes complicated in numerical structure and form. Functional relations in the sound space, having the logical-mathematical basis are important in music. Music as an art form, is the art of number, time, motion, it contains the perfect number, its real embodiment in time and motion in space. Music-art is the thought activator and if we consider the process of musical development, it is possible to find out that the piece of music shows a certain system of relationship and we, listening to it, enter the world of peculiar measurements where nothing is casual and where every moment of sounding is associated with previous and subsequent soundings. Here everything is caused; everything flows, and is given in motion. Being in the power of a musical development gives feeling of staying in any other world, than the habitual visible and tangible world and causes representation of other time and other space. The process principle that operates in historical development of musical culture together with evolution of the person is characteristic for music together with functionality principle. As music can be considered as sound substance, its development fits into a common socio-natural process, showing not separate physical abstractions, but a single stream of events in a continuous process of the universe and of human history. And this process becomes an object of knowledge in interdisciplinary connections.

The modern philosophy of music reinterprets ideas of harmony of spheres, a universal Rhythm, functionality and process principles as properties of music and allows to tell about the law of cycles in global scales. Music as a display of vibrations of the complex communicative system – person-society-nature-space – can act as cognitive value in a science, and the category "musicality" can claim to be a self-sufficient category in aesthetics if to take as a basis «the musical man» in the ancient understanding of a wise man, striving to a perfect way of life.

Putting forward "musicality" as the universal aesthetic category, we will raise the question: whether musicality needs the alternative, as categories of aesthetics are usually represented: fine/ugly, high/low, tragic/comic, poetic/prosaic. Musicality can be present at each aesthetic value, in any aesthetic phenomenon. Musicality concerns space and time, differs in rhythm with even or uneven pulsation (regulated or spontaneous), it is everywhere where there is life, the process which is not destroying a harmony, an order of a whole. In this aspect painting is a light show, and music is in the heart of poetry, and architecture is «the frozen music», and drawing reveals musical motion in graphics. If to imagine an antithesis musical/not musical just as poetic it is opposed to prosaic, aesthetic musical (more than art of music) characterizes coordination of life of the human spirit, determined by the balanced ratio of the consonants and dissonances of life, and not musical acts as the characteristic of esthetic anti-values in relation to life of human spirit. At the same time, as the modern aesthetic perception and experience indicate ambiguous, intertextual reading of aesthetic phenomena and events’ meanings in life and in art, it is expedient to present not a dichotomy musical/not musical (comparable harmonious/disharmonious), but in a different way. After all musicality can be not only harmonious, but also disharmoniously sounding or even not sounding, assuming soul vibration, the internal movement of "expecting" spirit. Musicality, in our opinion, can act in two ways: characteristics of the aesthetic perception emphasizing rhythm-spatial-temporal sense, experience of any expressive forms and characteristics of structural features in art, art creativity or in «science art». Such concepts as harmony, melody, rhythm, duration, recurrence, repetition, pause, disproportion, symmetry and asymmetry, square and other structures which are common for aesthetics as a philosophical science are known in musical art as well. Musicality as aesthetic is caused by rhythms heard and unheard, judging and estimating. We learn musical in the nature and in life, in art and culture.

The category "musicality" was realized in aesthetics of the last century when avant-garde experiments and musical-theoretical concepts appeared: musical form as a single process, understanding of epochal movement of art styles, ideas of supranational in art, synthesis of arts in a context of world and universal processes, etc. In a live art practice avant-garde of the first wave of the 1910s in music, painting, and poetry came closer to the scientific and technical knowledge where the task was to convey Rhythm, time pulsation. These were musical experiments in Russia. The structural idea of "Bolero" of M. Ravel with repeated monotonic and mechanical rhythm arose in connection with the visit to a plant. Zh. Syor's pointillism in painting and A. Webern’s pointillism in music are development of microcosms. Musicality is comprehended as aesthetic in the field of expressive forms by V. Kandinsky, A. Scriabin, Symbolist poets. A new musical aesthetics, not Eurocentric, but rather a "transversal, transmusical" comes nowadays when synthetic musical phenomena receive universal, supranational value and go to "the global arena."

The philosophy of music indicates a worthy place of the category of musicality in the system of aesthetic values. Musicality as aesthetic category and the concept of the musical man in a context of philosophy as a way of knowing and a way of life is a problem of innovative approach in a task-object field of aesthetics.
